Woodblock Engravings

This woodblock engraving is from the Illustrated London News included in an article about the opening of the new United Presbyterian Church at Irvine on 19th November 1864. You can see the printing on the reverse side of the newspaper page.

The Illustrated London News was the very first newspaper to include illustrations alongside the text. It's first issue was on the 14th May 1842 and it employed an army of draughtsmen and engravers to create the illustrations on such short a short turn around. All engravings were woodblock engravings.
