Maybole Castle

A 16th century L plan tower house built by Gilbert Kennedy, 5th Earl of Cassillis and High Lord Treasurer of Scotland.

The Rev. R. Lawson in his 'Views of Carrick' said of this castle, - Maybole Castle was formerly the Town House of the Cassillis lords who ruled Carrick in days of old. Of recent years it has seen considerable modernisation; but the stout square keep in the centre has stood for considerably over 300 years. The pretty oriel window above lights the room where the Countess, who eloped with the gipsy laddie, is said to have been confined till the day of her death. The carved chimney heads. too, are much admired, as well as the quaintly ornamented windows; while Robert Chambers says of the whole building, that "a finer, more sufficient, and more entire house of its kind has never fallen under the notice of the present writer."

There are excellent developments in hand for this building with historical and natural history exhibits planned including a live webcam display of breeding Gannets from the RSPB Ailsa Craig reserve.
