Cloncaird Castle

A mansion in Kirkmichael parish on the right
bank of Girvan Water, 5 miles ESE of Maybole. Dating partly from the
16th century, with a huge square tower, it received additions in 1814,
forming an entirely new front. {from 'Ordinance Gazetteer of Scotland'
edited by Francis H. Groome}

Blaeu's Atlas of Scotland (Kyle) drawn in 1654 and is presented

Blaeu's map on
the left in the 1650s next to the Water of Girvan at which time it
would have been a square tower.

This map is

1745 and is presented

Moll's map on
the right doesn't seem to have the castle clearly marked. It look s as
though 'Klonk' is the closest to Cloncaird and is on the correct side
of the river.

Armstrong's
map just 30 years or so later now shows Cloncaird Manson and is
remarkably close to the Bartholomew's map of 1951, shown on the right.
In the late
15th century, the Mures owned the property. Patrick Mure of Cloncaird
was killed in the Battle of Flodden in 1513. King James IV of Scotland
took his army into England as part of an agreement with King Louis XII
of France to divert some of Henry VIII's forces from fighting in
France. Although outnumbered, the English won a major victory and King
James IV died in the battle. For more details on the battle
